It has been said that up to 80% of the traffic on the internet is due to Bittorrent. Finally got it working a few days ago and have to say am very impressed at the speeds and the database.
The problem most people have with it is the configuration of the router (and firewall). Its a real pain to set up coz it involves a lot of jargon but this site is fantastic and provides step by step instructions with illustrations.
You basically need to set up a static IP and then forward the appropriate ports to allow your program to communicate. Get a dedicated bittorrent client (bitlord or ABC are recommended) and you will be off and flying!
